Introducing St Luke’s Taroona

Isn’t it great that we do life with Jesus together? See below for a letter from Ruth Hanlon, Senior Minister of Sandy Bay/Taroona Parish, with a message of how you may be able to partner with them in sharing Jesus’ good news.

St Luke’s sits in the heart of Taroona, set back off the main road.  It is unassuming from the outside but has the most amazing view of the Derwent River, inspiring worship, and thankfulness to our wonderful Creator God.

St Luke’s has a very faithful and growing congregation of around 45 regulars each week.  Coming back post COVID lockdown there has been a real sense of renewal and God moving among his people.

The congregation is largely made up of people over 60 years of age, many in their 80’s and 90’s!  We have had one family join with 2 preschoolers, and we have one with primary school age children intermittently. Like many congregations we seem to have many more women than men and so we pray for more men to join us. Currently we only have women on our Council, and we pray for men and younger ones with skills.  We also pray for a treasurer.

Our desire is to grow an intergenerational Church, full of the breath of God’s Spirit that will continue to flourish.  We pray for a few more families to join us so that the Church will carry on in the coming years. We long to reach out to families in our community; that young and old may come into a relationship of faith with Jesus.

Typically, Taroona has been a predominantly Anglo community, but it is changing.  Post COVID our little playgroup has blossomed, attracting 3 Chinese and 2 Muslim families.  We have a few volunteers from our congregation but again it would be wonderful to have a family or younger person with energy to assist with playgroup and build relationships and shine the light of Jesus.

Taroona is a creative community and to that end we run “Creative Space”; a writing group on a Tuesday afternoon and an art group on Thursday afternoons.  Lately a couple of locals have joined these groups.

We would love you to pray for St Luke’s that God will continue to grow his Kingdom here.  If you feel called to join us in mission, I would love to hear from you.  God is good and we look forward to seeing how he continues to pour out his grace and grow his Church.
